Cameron Green’s all-around performance and some outstanding fielding enabled Australia to defeat Scotland 3-0 in Edinburgh. Australia overcame the problem of losing their openers early in the chase and finished with 23 balls remaining when Green first recorded his career-best statistics to help reduce the hosts to 149 for 9. He then went on to spearhead the pursuit with his greatest score.
Against Australia, Brandon McMullen made his third half-century in as many games, but it was insufficient as only he and opener George Munsey were able to really impact the Scottish innings. Australia had a nervous start to their chase, unlike in the opening match of the series, when they hammered 156 in 10 overs. With a brilliant dive to his left at backward point, McMullen got rid of Jake Fraser-McGurk off Brad Currie for the batter’s second consecutive series duck.
For the second match in a straight, Currie dismissed Head to long-on in his subsequent over, accounting for both of Australia’s openers in his opening two overs. However, Mitchell Marsh, who had dropped to No. 3 in the second game, and Cameron Green cobbled together a 61-run partnership to put Australia ahead. In the powerplay, Currie was handed a third over in a row as Scotland attempted to capitalize on the early movement available. However, in the sixth over, Marsh and Green pounced on the left-arm fast, blasting him for sixes between deep midwicket and long-on.
Marsh then got a boundary off Safyaan Sharif and pulled Chris Sole for a six. Green drove Mark Watt for four as he entered the attack, then launched him for a six over long-on. Then, Jack Jarvis gave Scotland a breakthrough when Marsh was cut down while attempting to pull a long ball that became lodged in the turf. Green and Tim David, however, persisted in their assault, striking sixes in each of the following three overs, the finest of which was a reverse-sweeping blow from Watt over backward point.
Green subsequently ran Jarvis to the ground and, with a single, reached a 33-ball fifty. Australia needed only 19 from 34 balls when David, who had struck two fours to finish the Jarvis over, holed out off Sole’s slower short ball to deep-backward square leg. Before Aaron Hardie scored the winning runs with a square drive for his second boundary, Green persisted in his attack on Watt, hitting him for six more runs.
Ollie Hairs returned to the team due to an injury to Michael Jones, and it was he who handed Scotland the early advantage when Australia decided to bowl first. He pulled Sean Abbott for six after hitting Hardie over covers for four. However, Hardie got him to chop on, which was Australia’s first real breakthrough. Munsey, who had been having trouble up until that point, smashed a six over midwicket with quick hands to close the third over. When the puck arrived during the powerplay, McMullen welcomed rookie Cooper Connolly with a six over long-on.
McMullen hooked Stoinis for four in the following over. In the sixth over, Green was put in to draw Munsey’s inside edge past the stumps for a four. The following ball was put by Munsey over cow corner, but Green squeezed him for space and forced him to direct a catch to backward point. After the fielding rules were loosened, the score decreased. Then, with a jagged in delivery from outside off, Green bowled Richie Berrington through the gate. However, McMullen hooked Green for a six against Australia to continue his stellar streak.
Three overs later, McMullen reacted by lofting the legspinner over long-on, only to have Cross bowled by Adam Zampa. At long-on, off Abbott, McMullen remained solid as Michael Leask holed out to a superb diving grab by David. He reached his half-century off of 32 balls when he struck Connolly for a four. But McMullen’s innings was ended by a spectacular catch made by Head at short fine leg. Although McMullen’s attempt to scoop a short ball over his shoulder was well-timed, Head shifted to his right and successfully retrieved it.
Green claimed his maiden three-wicket haul in a T20 match when he removed Mark Watt in the last over. Scotland managed just 11 runs for the loss of three wickets in the remaining 20 deliveries.
