The West Indies are just three wickets away from defeating Bangladesh in the Antigua Test. After being given a goal of 334, the visitors finished the fourth day at 109 for 7. For the umpteenth time this year, Bangladesh’s specialist batsmen failed to put together a performance, with Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales leading the way for the hosts with three wickets apiece. After being bowled out for 152 in the second innings, the West Indies themselves were unable to set a higher goal. Taskin Ahmed finished with 6 for 64, his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
This followed Bangladesh’s unexpected announcement on the fourth morning, even though they were 181 runs behind the West Indies’ 450 for 9 first-inning total. But the hitters from Bangladesh were unable to pay their bowlers back. Similar to how they were removed in the first innings, both of their openers were removed. Mahmudul Hasan Joy edged Seales to third slip, and Zakir Hasan inside-edged Roach onto his stumps. Then, in the eleventh over, Roach set up Shahadat Hossain, who bowled a thunderous inswinger after getting the ball to seam away many times.
Shahadat attempted to move aside as the ball caressed his gloves, but Joshua Da Silva got the inside edge. Then, in his opening over, Shamar Joseph witnessed two dropped catches, both by Mominul Haque. Before Mikyle Louis was unable to hold onto a simple one at Gully, Da Silva missed an opportunity along the leg side. But Mominul was short-lived as Roach bowled from his drive in the following over after taking a brilliant catch. At the opposite end, however, Shamar’s misfortune persisted.
With the Bangladesh captain on 14, Alick Athanaze dropped Mehidy Hasan Miraz at second slip. Seales managed to get a hold on it at the backward point after Litton Das sliced one uppishly. However, Shamar’s frustration at seeing four catches dropped off his bowling was short-lived. In the 18th over, he had Litton caught at fine leg for 22, bringing Bangladesh down to 59 for 5. The only one battling for Bangladesh was Mehidy, who kept the scoreboard moving while enduring the onslaught of short balls.
Before Da Silva made a brilliant catch and Seales caught him behind, he scored 45 from 46 balls with five fours and a six. Taijul Islam was then also clean bowled by Seales. Despite the surprising announcement, the morning had begun well for the West Indies. On nine, Shahadat dropped captain Kraigg Brathwaite at first slip. Taskin hit Louis’ front pad with an inswinger on the next ball, but umpire Kumar Dharmasena declared it not out. The hitter was plumb in front, according to replays, but Bangladesh had not taken the review.
But when the opener was caught behind for eight in his subsequent over, Taskin took Louis out. As an additional reward for his superb line and length in his opening effort, Taskin then had Keacy Carty caught at third slip. In the next over, Brathwaite led Shoriful Islam to a second slip, giving the visitors’ choice to declare early support. Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge came very close to saving the West Indies. Bangladesh hit three runs in as many overs after the pair hit eight fours before the lunch break, just after they reached 50 for the fourth wicket.
Taskin’s exquisite delivery, which veered slightly off course, caught Hodge off guard for fifteen. Additionally, it was Litton Das’ 100th Test catch. In the next over, Mehidy took Athanaze out. The teenage left-hander hit 42 from 63 balls, including seven fours, but he played a pointless shot, striking on the back foot as he attempted to cut a spinning ball into him. Justin Greaves made just two runs in the second innings when Taskin clipped his off-stump with yet another outstanding ball.
Taskin was instantly the target of a counterattack by Alzarri Joseph, and this time there was no verbal contact between the two. Da Silva did the same, hitting two fours off the next over from Taskin. The left-arm spinner got one to get huge on Da Silva, who surrendered a catch to point after he hit Taijul for a straight six. After top-edging Mehidy, Alzarri holed out to a short, excellent leg. Mominul had missed a reasonably tough chance, but he had survived a similar top edge before. Carty had also been dumped at short cover by Mominul previously.
But when Taskin yorked Shamar to finish his first five-for, it was all forgotten. After Roach was tricked by a slower ball from Taskin, Mehidy made a spectacular diving catch at mid-off to end the West Indies innings. However, on the fourth day, Bangladesh’s hitters failed to find inspiration in their bowlers.
