Bangladesh defeated the hosts by 101 runs in Jamaica, recording their first Test victory in the West Indies in 15 years. Following their significant loss in the opening Test match in Antigua, where the series ended 1-1, the visitors made an incredible comeback. As players like Taijul Islam, Jaker Ali, and Nahid Rana wrote their third away victory of 2024—their most in a calendar year—it was therapeutic for a team that had suffered crushing defeats in their previous five Test matches.
Taijul, a left-arm spinner, bowled out the West Indies for 185 after taking 5 for 50 in the fourth innings. After ten years, it was his first five-wicket haul in the Caribbean and his fifteenth overall. The remaining five wickets were taken by Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, and Rana. In the second innings, Rana helped bowl the West Indies out for 146, taking his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Despite making just 164 in the first innings, Bangladesh had a remarkable comeback in the second.
Jaker, who scored a counterattacking 91 with five sixes and eight fours, was responsible for this. Jaker scored 62 of Bangladesh’s 75 runs during the fourth day’s morning session. When Jayden Seales returned impressive figures of 5 for 4 from 15.5 overs, the West Indies would feel that they handed up a strong start in the Test match. Bangladesh changed the pace in a fierce third afternoon after a fired-up Seales gave up runs in the third innings. Jaker was crucial in helping Bangladesh increase their advantage from 211 on the fourth morning.
Alzarri Joseph pinged him on the top of his helmet, so things didn’t start out well for him. Bayezid Islam Khan, the Bangladeshi physiotherapist, needed some time to clear Jaker because the BCB was concerned about his history of concussions. When Bangladesh lost consecutive wickets, the situation got worse. After he and Jaker put up 34 runs for the sixth wicket, Taijul edged a short ball on 14. When Mominul Haque dropped off his fourth ball, he finished his second Test pair. Now that Bangladesh’s tail was out, he went away with a clearly sick appearance.
Jaker pursued the West Indies onslaught with his back to the wall. He hit a boundary by hooking Kemar Roach over wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva. Jaker reached his third successive fifty in his first three Test matches after timing a pull shot off Alzarri for his first six. After Zakir Hasan, he is just the second player from Bangladesh to accomplish the feat. For the next two balls, Jaker was on a roll. He followed it up with a hooked six after flaying at a short ball to get a four over the slips. Roach retaliated with two more wickets after Jaker hit him over wide long-on in the following over. Mahmud and Taskin were dismissed by Roach in back-to-back overs. But Jaker had one more outburst of bounds.
He launched Roach for his fourth six, straight down the ground, after smashing Shamar Joseph for two fours in an over, both pull shots. Earlier in the over, he was caught in the deep after his fifth six from Shamar was hoicked over midwicket. When he had Mikyle Louis in a tangle in the fifth over, Taijul got to work. Shahadat Hossain claimed a spectacular catch at forward short leg as Louis edged the ball onto his front foot while attempting to drive it. Brathwaite targeted the bowling of Bangladesh after seeing the need to gain momentum.
He had already used a square-cut to pick up a boundary, but he drove Mahmud through the covers after lunch. Keacy Carty was unable to get the bowlers away at the other end, but he hit Taijul over wide long-on for a six. After a series of dot balls, Taskin had Carty caught behind for 14, then Taijul took out Brathwaite with the big one. After causing some trouble for the West Indies skipper, he got one to spin and pop on Brathwaite’s bat shoulder. Mahmudul Hasan Joy completed a tumbling catch after running to his right from slip.
Then, through the enormous space between bat and pad created by Alick Athanaze, Taijul got one to pitch on a rough area and spin back. In his six-ball stay, Athanaze, who went for a wide drive, appeared perplexed by his strategy. Hodge maintained his form throughout, appearing trim as he established consistent boundaries. In quick succession, he sliced Taskin and slapped Rana. He went inside out against Taijul prior to tea after hitting Mehidy for two fours in an over. The third session got off to a strong start for West Indies.
After the intermission, Hodge reached his fifty off the first ball, but he also fell soon after. Hodge was trapped lbw after playing back to a Taijul delivery that remained quite low. He has previously been eliminated in a similar manner by Keshav Maharaj and Shoaib Bashir. The batter didn’t try to get low enough to meet the ball, but Taskin then cleaned up Justin Greaves with one that stayed a bit low too. Once more, a West Indies batter was out LBW to a ball that they could have hit off the front foot, ending Joshua Da Silva’s wretched series.
Mahmud immediately made an impression when Mehidy brought him in for a second term. In order to push Bangladesh to the limit, he dismissed Alzarri and Roach. Then came the pivotal moment when Shamar was hit with a yorker to end the hard-fought victory after Rana had altered the game’s momentum with his five-for in the first inning.
