In the pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval, Australia leveled the series on the third afternoon with a decisive victory that was highlighted by Pat Cummins’ five-wicket haul. Mitchell Starc’s brilliantly pitched ball in the first over of the day put Rishabh Pant nicking behind for his overnight score of 28, signaling the end for India. A little more than an hour into the first session, India folded for 175. Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja scored 19 runs in four overs when they were needed.
When Cummins was hitting bouncer after bouncer, India was in danger of losing an innings victory. The Australia captain’s short balls claimed the lives of R Ashwin, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. To the pleasure of the Adelaide fans, their hero Travis Head dismissed Mohammed Siraj, who had been declared the public enemy No. 1 after giving Head a farewell on day two, with a falling catch. However, in their second innings, Australia didn’t require Head at bat since Khawaja and McSweeney put the finishing touches on them.
Some of its players were taken aback by Australia’s 295-run thumping in Perth, but they responded well in Adelaide to level the score and provide a great setup for the remainder of the series. In the second Test, Cummins, who didn’t appear to be as adept with the ball in the first, was back to his best. Cummins pulled his lengths further back with the older ball, which wasn’t swinging or seaming as much in natural light, after hitting the top of Rohit’s off stump with the pink new ball on Saturday under the lights.
With a nastier bouncer, he had Rana pop up a catch to Gully when Ashwin was gloving behind him. Despite two players being out on the leg-side boundary, Reddy challenged Cummins and caught a throat-high lifter over square leg for six. However, Reddy blasted it straight to fine third when Cummins angled one across him from around the wicket next delivery. With a final score of 42 off 47 balls, Reddy has top-scored for India in his first Test series for the third time in four innings.
As a result of the hosts only having to face 81 overs in each innings, the pink-ball Test was the shortest in Australia and the shortest between the two sides. When their adopted son McSweeney scored two fours in the tight chase and their favorite son Head won Player-of-the-Match, the 33,184-strong Adelaide audience had even more cause to celebrate.
