West Indies defeated Bangladesh by five wickets at St Kitts, ending an 11-match losing streak, thanks to Sherfane Rutherford’s first ODI century. Rutherford’s 80-ball 113 completely overcame a sluggish start to the chase as the host team chased down a target of 295 to grab a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. With 14 balls left, West Indies, who had formerly need 161 off 114 balls, achieved their goal. Rutherford completed his century after Bangladesh gave up six runs through overthrows in the 47th over. During his innings, Rutherford was hit twice on his helmet.

He celebrated by hitting back-to-back sixes over long-off and midwicket off Soumya Sarkar. Nahid Rana completed a catch when he squeezed one to short third man, but the West Indies only needed seven more at that point. Rutherford raced from 19 off 29 balls in the 32nd over to 94 runs in 51 balls, hitting seven fours and eight sixes. He is currently the fourth West Indian to reach five straight 50-plus scores in ODIs, behind Shai Hope, Chris Gayle, and Gordon Greenidge, who have all reached six in a row.

Hope, who came in at 27 for 2, scored an 88-ball 86, and Rutherford added 99 runs for the fourth wicket. Then, for the fifth wicket, Rutherford and Justin Greaves scored 95 runs in 57 balls. Greaves concluded with an undefeated 41 off 31 balls and five fours, scoring the game-winning runs. For a large portion of the first half of their pursuit, the West Indies were having difficulties. They were unable to get going against Bangladesh’s fast-bowling trio after losing Brandon King and Evin Lewis in the opening powerplay.

In the following over, Nahid Rana hit Lewis’ back pad in front of the stumps with a delivery of 148.9 kph, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib caught King lbw for 9 off 17 when he attempted to pull one that wasn’t short enough. The next step was for Keacy Carty and Hope to unite. Carty scored a careful 21 off 37 balls as they amassed 67 runs for the third wicket in the next 13.3 overs. A frustrating dismissal for the in-form West Indies batsman came when Rishad Hossain was caught at short midwicket with a short ball.

During this third-wicket stand, the home team slowed down considerably, and with 21 overs left in the chase, the needed rate had risen to eight an over. At that point, Hope took Mehidy Hasan Miraz, his opponent, to the ground for six. It ended a 28-ball stretch without a boundary. In the 32nd over, Rutherford hit Mehidy for a four and a six, and in the 33rd over, he drove Taskin for a boundary, opening the floodgates.

Rutherford was disturbed by the short ball till this point and pulled Rana for a six in between Hope’s successive overs in which he smacked Rishad down the ground for sixes. In the 36th over, he hit his fifty. Hope was caught at deep midwicket by Mehidy, who subsequently offered Bangladesh a lifeline, but the West Indies had already gained much-needed momentum from the 99-run fourth wicket partnership. Greaves then made sure he maintained the pace by hitting three fours in a row.

After pulling Tanzim for his third six, Rutherford increased the stakes by hitting Mehidy for his fourth in the next over. In the 43rd over, Rutherford hit double sixes against Taskin to register his greatest ODI score. With just 37 needed, West Indies’ required rate dropped to a run per ball as Greaves sliced Tanzim through the covers in the next over. Three important partnerships had also dominated Bangladesh’s innings. Before Soumya Sarkar fell in the fifth over, they had a fast start.

After winning the GSL Player of the Tournament award, Soumya hit two fours in a row off Alzarri Joseph before getting caught behind later in the same over. He was soon followed by Litton Das, who was trapped behind Romario Shepherd. But already, Tanzid Hasan had hit three fours and a straight six. Captain Mehidy, who escaped two chances after Carty dropped him on 1 and 31, scored 79 runs for the third wicket. Mehidy scored the most points with 74, riding his luck.

With two more sixes over long-off and boundaries all over the wicket, Tanzid appeared to be the more assured of the two. But in the 24th over, Tanzid was caught at point by Alzarri Joseph, going against the flow of play. He left upset that he had not scored more after making a run-a-ball 60. Meanwhile, Mehidy and the returning Afif Hossain kept switching up the strike. Shepherd caught Afif on the leg-side boundary after the fourth-wicket partnership scored 54.

After smashing six fours and a spectacular whipping six over fine-leg off Jayden Seales, Mehidy ultimately scored 74 from 101 balls. In the 38th over, he was caught by Rutherford after falling to the same bowler and skying to extra cover. Jaker Ali and Mahmudullah contributed 96 runs for the sixth wicket, 84 of which came in the final 10 overs, thanks to Mehidy’s excellent foundation. In his undefeated fifty from forty-four balls, Mahmudullah hit three sixes and as many fours on the leg side.

In addition, Jaker hit three sixes, one of which landed outside the stadium’s grounds off Joseph. Shepherd ended with three wickets after he hit 48 from 40 balls, falling off the last delivery of the innings. The final 6.3 overs of Bangladesh’s innings saw Jaker and Mahmudullah hit all six of their six sixes.
