On a fast-paced second day that saw 377 runs and seven wickets, Australia took control of the third Border-Gavaskar Test at the Gabba thanks to centuries of play from the two legendary Indian tormentors, Travis Head and Steven Smith. The outstanding Jasprit Bumrah took five of those wickets, keeping India in the match virtually by himself and increasing his total Test score in Australia to 49. The only Indian bowler to surpass him is now Kapil Dev (51). Almost alone, since Bumrah wasn’t the only Indian who was fast to cause Australia problems in this area.
Akash Deep concluded the day without a wicket despite continuing to land the ball in difficult locations and creating almost as many false shots (45) as Bumrah (66). Mohammed Siraj also played a strong shift, as India exerted pressure on Australia from both ends for the most of the opening session. However, as the day went on, India’s attack’s lack of depth became apparent, and Australia withdrew as Head and Smith combined for a thrilling 241 for the fourth wicket in 302 balls.
With Bumrah removing Smith, Mitchell Marsh, and Head in 12 balls, the second new ball provided India some relief, but Australia was already in a great position. Although time (all but 13.2 overs of day one were wiped out) and the weather may yet make it more difficult for them to win, they were 405 for 7 at stumps and in a position to control the remainder of this Test match.
