Australia took a 2-1 lead in the Border Gavaskar Trophy early in the last hour at the MCG after winning an amazing Test match played in front of a record crowd. They did this by taking seven wickets in the last session just when it looked like India would win the match. Hometown hero Scott Boland produced three crucial incisions to seal one of Australia’s most important victories in recent history, while Yashasvi Jaiswal resisted the home team for 208 deliveries before succumbing to the mighty Pat Cummins.

A margin of 184 runs did not adequately capture the tension and drama of the final day, nor the significance of the outcome for this Australia team, who have turned their fortunes around after the devastating opening defeat in Perth. Nathan Lyon took the final wicket when he pinned Mohammed Siraj leg before wicket, igniting wild celebrations for the home team. Following India’s decline to 33 for 3, Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant combined for 88 runs in 32 overs, putting India in the final session with seven wickets remaining.

However, Australia took the lead when Travis Head burgled Pant’s wicket, causing India to lose 7 for 34. The fast bowlers were terrific; Cummins and Boland added more chapters to earlier MCG exploits, while Mitchell Starc bowled in the mid-140 kph range despite a back ache. Cummins’ superb all-round Test performance, which included 90 runs and six wickets, won him the Johnny Mullagh Medal as Player of the Match. When Jaiswal gloved a pull down the leg side against Cummins, his rearguard was stopped by the DRS, which also caused some debate.

Third umpire Sharfuddoula declared that he had witnessed a definite deflection, which matched what was shown on television, even though Snicko did not record anything. Jaiswal talked to the umpires as he was leaving, but he seemed to know he had struck it. It was too much for India’s bottom order, which had 21 overs to survive. India can still win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in this series if they win in Sydney, but the loss means they have no chance of making it to the World Test Championship final.

Australia would join South Africa, who qualified yesterday with their own thrilling victory against Pakistan, in the WTC final with a victory in the last Test match, preferably by a 3-1 score. Australia was nine runs down on the last day, so they decided to keep batting, which only contributed six more runs but took four overs off the day’s allotment. Jasprit Bumrah maintained his record of having the most Test runs without reaching a half-century when Lyon became his sixth wicket.

All of this meant that India needed 340 runs in 92 overs, and the Gabba 2021 was always a possibility. Early on, India was exceedingly cautious against some very difficult new ball bowling; Rohit Sharma subsequently stated that they set out to create a chase foundation, although it always seemed unlikely. As has so frequently happened, Cummins took the lead after Australia was forced to wait for their first incisions. Mitchell Marsh made a brilliant catch after he had the struggling Rohit edging to the gully.

Five balls later, he squared up KL Rahul with a fantastic delivery that fell to first slip. Starc was rewarded for pushing over the pain threshold in the last over before lunch as he enticed Virat Kohli into his most recent drive outside off, with Usman Khawaja receiving the edge. The wicket put an end to Kohli’s contentious Melbourne stint and demonstrated that India had no realistic chance of pursuing the score. Throughout the afternoon, Jaiswal and Pant performed really well, fending off everything Australia threw at them.

After missing three catches yesterday, including a crucial opportunity off Marnus Labuschagne, Jaiswal reached his second fifty of the game off 127 balls after surviving a close lbw challenge against Starc on 31. Immediately following tea, India was 121 for 3. When Head dropped a delivery short outside off stump, Pant went for the pull, finding Marsh at long-on who made a fantastic catch. Head was employed in part to increase Australia’s over rate, which put them at risk of losing WTC points. It created a gap for Australia. and faith.

Cummins got back to Boland fast, and he immediately took the bat’s shoulder through to Carey by making a delivery hop at Ravindra Jadeja. Nitish Kumar Reddy, India’s first-innings savior, edged a ball in Lyon’s subsequent over that went straight on, and Steven Smith made an incredible catch, low to his left at slip. Australia had blown the innings open after taking 3 for 9. The DRS was called upon once more to determine that Akash Deep had a small edge in his pad that went to his short leg.

And Jaiswal’s dismissal would probably be examined in further detail over the next several days. Australia was the clear favorite by that point, especially because a fresh ball would soon be ready, but ultimately, that wasn’t even necessary. Smith made another incredible catch after Boland found Bumrah’s outside edge, and Lyon then cannoned one into Siraj’s front pad. India reviewed, as was to be expected, but it was just going to the stumps. Lyon performed a dance of excitement upon the confirmation of the judgment.

In all, 373,691 people watched the Test, setting a new record for an Australian Test match. One of the more memorable ones will be this one.
