In limited-overs cricket, India is accustomed to seeing its No. 3 finish frantic chases. The new player led India to a 2-0 lead with a 55-ball 72 that Virat Kohli himself would have been proud of, after the great one retired from Twenty20 Internationals. Tilak Varma had to alter his usual style of play and even farm the strike in the end since wickets were falling all around him, but he managed to muster just enough smashes to get India over the finish line with two wickets remaining. Two very different styles were brought to the game by the two teams.
India bowled 14 overs of England for 118 runs and six wickets, continuing to put them to the test with spin. After struggling to reach 165, the struggling England team released a burst of speed and bounce on a surface that provided them just enough zip. They gambled twice with spin in their valiant defense, but although the bounce and speed helped them take wickets, it also traveled. In his four overs, Jofra Archer scored sixty runs. Varma tipped the scales decisively with his last over, the 16th for 19. Arshdeep Singh took a wicket in the opening over.
Verify. This time with a bouncer delivered over the body of Phil Salt with two guys back for the hook. A spinny first-ball wicket. Verify. In place of the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy, this time to homeboy Washington Sundar. Varun Chakravarthy is out. Verify. Harry Brook bowled through the gate the first time he faced Varun. Axar Patel’s bowling was tight. Verify. And as a result, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone were taken out in two significant innings. However, England refused to become bogged down. Despite losing wickets, they continued to strike back.
Buttler scored 45 off 30. Score 90 for 5 in the 12th over. Jamie Smith, who replaced the injured Jacob Bethell, showed early promise by lofting Axar over long-on and playing him like a medium-pacer. When they brought in the fifth spinner, Abhishek Sharma, on a part-time basis, it appeared like India had gone to the well too frequently. After Smith smacked him for a six and a four off the first two balls, he ultimately blasted a third arm ball straight to long-off after going to the well too frequently.
Recruited to enhance the batting lineup, Brydon Carse demonstrated his versatility by scoring 31 runs off 17 balls, including three sixes. Two of those sixes were hit off Varun, as they anticipated the ball to turn or go straight. However, a miscalculated second run led to his dismissal, which hindered their momentum significantly. In the final four overs, they could only muster 29 runs. Archer and Mark Wood unleashed their pace under the evening sky.
Wood delivered a sharp ball that caught Abhishek out, but not before the opener hit Archer for three boundaries in the opening over. Varma raised the stakes by backing away and slicing for four, then sweeping for a massive six that flew out of the stadium. Meanwhile, Archer’s speed resulted in the dismissal of Sanju Samson. England stood firm and continued to challenge the central area of the field. They aimed to score runs, but Carse succeeded in dismissing Suryakumar Yadav and Dhruv Jurel with that specific length.
Jamie Overton followed up with a stunning delivery on his first ball, which got the glove of Hardik Pandya, causing India to lose three wickets for just 21 runs in four overs and dropping to 78 for 5 in 9.1 overs. With some grip at his disposal, Adil Rashid bowled exceptionally well in the middle overs, increasing the pressure on India. Just four runs were scored off 11 deliveries during the stand. Then, a sharp bouncer resulted in five wides, providing some relief for India.
However, it appeared that Wood had once again created a wicket opportunity, but Rashid failed to hold onto an easy catch at mid-on. A no-ball later in the over was followed by a six from the free hit, along with two stunning back-foot aerial shots that sailed past mid-off. Now 53 runs were needed from seven balls. Buttler turned to Archer to capitalize on their advantage, but Tilak turned the tide of the match. A top-edge six didn’t exactly please Archer, who had previously witnessed Tilak do the same, but the subsequent flat square-cut six left him astonished.
Further desperation unfolded when Arshdeep executed a toe-ended boundary, but Archer was distracted by his movement back and was not aiming for the stumps regardless. Buttler took another risk with Rashid. Tilak focused on maintaining the strike early, allowing Arshdeep only a single ball to face. Similar to Axar, Arshdeep swung hard as well and ended up getting caught at deep square leg. Carse bowled another accurate over, leaving 13 runs needed from the last two deliveries, prompting Buttler to take another risk.
Tilak faced the first four balls once more, managing just three runs. It’s hard to fault the lower order for their inconsistency. Even Ravi Bishnoi took a swing at Livingstone, but this time the ball edged just over short third. Tilak wrapped it up with a powerful cover drive for four with four balls remaining.
