Watch cricket video highlights between Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings. Indian Premier League 2024 fifty ninth match, played at Ahmedabad.
To keep Gujarat Titans’ (GT) playoff dreams alive, Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan tore up the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) onslaught and the record books. But the outcome damaged CSK’s hopes and presented them with a challenging playoff path. Next, CSK has an extremely short turnaround as they take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Chepauk on Sunday afternoon. In their last league match, which is scheduled for May 18 in Bengaluru, they will face a revitalized Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The loss to GT suggests that their chances of making the playoffs may depend on their net run rates (albeit CSK currently has the best NRR of the three teams with 12 points), and another loss might put the reigning champions in danger of missing out. Due to cramping, GT captain Gill had to leave the field for a while during their successful 231 defend. However, he had previously made a major contribution with the bat in a partnership of 210 runs with Sai Sudharsan, which tied the record for the greatest opening stand in IPL history. Gill and Sudharsan helped to surpass 100 IPL centuries along the road.
Sudharsan and Gill are not Travishek. They are more traditional hitters in the top order. But on Friday, they demonstrated that they are equally potent hitters on a lively red-soil Ahmedabad surface. In a 14-run first over, Gill took left-arm fingerspinner Mitchell Santner for a four and a six, setting the early pace. Subsequently, in the last over of the powerplay, Gill executed what may be considered the shot of the day. Gill used his skills to make Simarjeet Singh’s innocent back-of-a-length delivery appear to be a poor ball before he imperiously whacked it over mid-on for six.
After being quiet throughout the first few overs, Sudharsan came to life, hitting Ravindra Jadeja for 21 off only seven balls at a strike rate of 300. The spin-hitting Sudharsan made it impossible for Jadeja to bowl more than two overs that evening. Attempting to use Daryl Mitchell’s cutters, Ruturaj Gaikwad was eliminated for 4-0-52-0. By the end of the 16th over, Sudharsan and his skipper both had identical scores of 96 off 48 balls, demonstrating his rapid acceleration. With a four, Gill reached his hundred first, followed by Sudharsan with a six four balls later.
But Tushar Deshpande had both Gill and Sudharsan holing out in the space of five balls in the following over. Had he not dropped Gill at the long-off boundary, Deshpande might have finished Gill’s innings at 72; instead, he parried the ball onto the rope for a six. But he recovered well toward the end, showcasing his defensive prowess and having Shardul Thakur on his side. They only let GT to score 41 runs in the final five overs by continuing to hide the ball from their swinging arcs. The last three overs saw just one boundary, but CSK had a huge order to fulfill in the chase.
After being reduced to 2 for 2 in the first two overs, CSK’s situation got significantly worse. After being added back to the lineup to strengthen the top order, Rachin Ravindra was run out for just one. In the clash of the Impact Players, Sandeep Warrier defeated Ajinkya Rahane on the very next ball. After one off five balls, Rahane was out. After sliding down to No. 3, Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad chose one of the two guys on the boundary, Umesh Yadav, for a duck. Because of the early strikes, CSK was unable to take more chances and finished the powerplay with just 43 for 3.
Then, Daryl Mitchell repeatedly pumped the ball over the top, giving the pursuit a lead. He even took Rashid Khan, the top spinner for GT, for eighteen runs in only seven deliveries. The left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad was drawn up by Moeen, who was having difficulty picking up Rashid’s variations, and he hit him for three consecutive sixes to begin the 11th over.
Up until Mohit Sharma’s intervention, CSK had a chance at 119 for 3 in 12 overs. With his second delivery, a deceptively disguised knuckleball, Mohit got Mitchell to skye a catch to long-off, where he scored 63 off 34 balls. He got Moeen to hole out for 56 off 36 balls with an on-pace delivery into the surface in his subsequent over. Additionally, Mohit took Shivam Dube for 21 off just 13 balls, finishing with the best figures of the day, 3 for 31. When GT and CSK played each other in a three-day IPL final at this location last season, Mohit was unable to complete the task. On Friday, even with MS Dhoni’s late cameo, CSK was far from victorious because to his excellent performance.
