Match Report

To begin the three-match Twenty20 International series, a youthful Indian team outplayed an experienced Bangladeshi team. India was too strong for Bangladesh, who wore the identical uniforms as the World Cup winning team, despite having two debutants in their starting XI and just three players from that team remaining. Bangladesh never really looked like they had the batting for the Gwalior surface, which has somewhat uneven bounce and an accurate Indian attack, from the moment they lost Litton Das to a slog in the opening over.

Mayank Yadav began his international debut with a maiden over following Arshdeep Singh’s early blowouts, while Varun Chakravarthy, who was back, smashed through the middle overs. With 49 balls remaining, a commanding India defeated a pitiful 128. Arshdeep, the attack leader and quickly rising to the top of India’s wickets table, got off to a perfect start, displaying just the right amount of swing to keep Bangladesh’s young player, Parvez Hossain Emon, honest. Then Das opened the face for a four on the opening ball, which resulted in a fielder coming up on the leg side and a short third going back.

He attempted to play the field second ball, but the angle of it failed him. Arshdeep had Parvez, who had hit Hardik Pandya for a six, playing on in his second over. Bangladesh 14 off 2.1 overs for 2. With their fast tempo and enigmatic spin, Mayank and Varun were hardly the best combination to push the pace further. They were already behind the game. With Varun making his comeback to the India XI after three years and Mayank playing competitive cricket for the first time since his injury during the IPL, Bangladesh’s only hope was ring rust. They were both not rusty.

The other debutant, Nitish Kumar Reddy, dropped the ball under the floodlights of the Gwalior debut venue, despite Varun having generated an opportunity with the second ball. Mayank became the third player to begin his India T20I career with a maiden as he bowled the final over of the powerplay. The other two are Arshdeep and Ajit Agarkar, the current chairman of selectors, who has expedited Mayank. The pair soon shared a wicket between them. The man who had benefited from the prior drop, Towhid Hridoy, drew Varun straight to long-on, while Mahmudullah spooned Mayank to deep point.

The runs were rarely coming in, so their only real choice was to play these low-percentage attempts. Varun was still aggressive, taking out Rishad Hossain on the outside and Jaker Ali on the inside. Despite being made to play the anchor, Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was unable to withstand the entrance of Washington Sundar’s offspin, which bowled him over and denied him room. Mehidy hasan Miraz extended the innings, but at the end, there was no effect on Arshdeep, Pandya, and Mayank’s accuracy. As the wickets continued falling, none of the final seven overs produced a double digit score.

With a precise yorker, Arshdeep splayed the center stumps and off stumps to end the innings. With 86 wickets, he is now India’s sixth most prolific T20I wicket-taker, right behind leader Yuzvendra Chahal, who has 96. A victory alone would not suffice for the hosts. They desired a significant victory. In the absence of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson had another opportunity to begin the innings. He started well, driving two boundaries to each side of the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

In the second over, Abhishek Sharma took Taskin Ahmed for two fours and a six, showing greater power than touch. He seemed to be experiencing an adrenaline high as he exhausted himself in search of a nonexistent single. However, India persisted in rendering Bangladesh defenseless. As Suryakumar Yadav produced fake strokes behind the wicket, Samson continued to drive the ball down the ground.

India’s greatest powerplay against Bangladesh in Twenty20 Internationals ended with a score of 71, only their fourth-highest powerplay loss overall. Samson would be frustrated that he was caught off guard by a hoick on the first ball of offspin, but his dismissal in the last over of the powerplay did not stop India from moving on. They both earned fast 29s. Pandya, 39 off 16, carried on dominating Bangladesh, finishing first with a no-look ramp over the keeper’s head to cap off the chase.

Match Preview

Since this would be the first international at the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium, where there are extra security measures in place due to demands for a boycott, the surface is a little bit of a mystery. In the past 12 months, Indian teams that have batted first in night games have averaged more than 190 runs, with four of the eight teams scoring more than 200 runs when batting first. On Sunday evening, the temperature is probably going to be a little lower than it usually is during the day.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz is back to play as an all-around batsman for the Bangladesh T20I team. Tanzid Hasan might not be chosen in favor of Parvez Hossain Emon. India’s seam attack and top order have undergone changes due to the absence of several regulars from their T20I lineup. Tilak Varma has been substituted for the injured Dube, although Nitish Kumar Reddy is most likely to take his spot in the starting lineup. Tearaway Mayank didn’t practice much in the build up to the series opener which might spell a debut for Harshit on Sunday.

Rishad Hossain, a legspinner, concluded the T20 World Cup earlier this year with 14 wickets at an economy rate of 7.76 and an average of 13.85, tied with Rashid Khan. After finishing the competition as Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker, he now wants to impress Indian IPL scouts in his second act. It will be difficult to follow up such a powerful showing, and many Bangladeshi players have had difficulty maintaining early success in the past. Since the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rishad has only participated in one competitive match; nevertheless, he has been training in Dhaka to catch up.

Sanju Samson will be called up to the top to join Abhishek as India has only selected one opener in Abhishek; Suryakumar made this confirmation on match eve. Even though Samson has faced Sri Lanka in his past two Twenty20 International matches, his IPL performance from earlier this year will be what gives him and the team management the confidence they need coming into this series. In IPL 2024, Samson once again demonstrated his talent in the format with a score of 531 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 153.46. He hopes to swiftly apply this skill to his international game.

It may be difficult to sell a T20I series in the middle of the Test season, but India and Bangladesh will each be focused on their own objectives during the three-match series that begins in Gwalior on Sunday. While India has rested its main players and will also be without Shivam Dube, who was ruled out on Saturday due to injury, the players who are on the margins will aim to prove they are reliable backups and also want to boost their IPL worth. In T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav’s team lacks Bangladesh’s level of experience, but his players are more talented and adaptable than theirs.

The more seasoned players on the Indian team include Suryakumar, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh, although even guys with fewer than ten Twenty20 international caps are talented athletes. The players without caps are Mayank Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana, newcomers; Abhishek Sharma, who made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in July, might add to his five caps. The absence of the majority of the host team’s first-choice fast bowlers might allow Mayank Yadav, who scored 150 kph for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.

Harshit, who won the IPL 2024 with the Kolkata Knight Riders, to make their IPL debuts. While Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, and the returning Varun Chakravarthy comprise the spin group, Hardik provides them with seam-bowling support. For Bangladesh, who don’t play many Twenty20 Internationals, this is a fantastic chance. There will be excitement in the visitors’ camp as they work to improve their game against a formidable opponent and consider their chances of getting selected for the IPL.

To defeat India, players with at least fifty Twenty20 international wickets, such as Mahmudullah, Mustafizur Rahman, Litton Das, Taskin Ahmed, and Mahedi Hasan, would need to gel as a team. Even more recent arrivals with developing reputations include Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Rishad Hossain, and Tanzid Hasan. Knowing who is out of their lineup makes all of this crucial. Bangladesh’s best cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan, has declared his retirement from Test and Twenty20 international cricket.
