Wiaan Mulder became South Africa’s third maiden century in the Chattogram Test, as the visitors controlled proceedings on day two. They declared on 575 for 6, with Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, and Tristan Stubbs scoring hundreds, before their pacers dispatched Bangladesh’s top three in the first six overs. The hosts fell to 38 for 4 at stumps, as their previous batting struggles were evident even on the batting-friendly track at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Even a five-run penalty awarded by the umpires for Senuran Muthusamy disturbing the pitch failed to motivate Bangladesh.
Kagiso Rabada, who was recently named No. 1 among Test bowlers, had Shadman Islam strangle down the leg side for a duck in his first over. Rabada then removed Zakir Hasan, who was also caught behind, for two runs in his following over. Dane Paterson got involved in the sixth over, as Mahmudul Hasan Joy pursued a wide ball and edged to Aiden Markram at second slip. Keshav Maharaj delivered a masterpiece to nightwatcher Hasan Mahmud, who utterly missed it and was bowled for three. It capped an incredible day for South Africa, which dominated from tip to end.
If de Zorzi and Stubbs dominated the first day, Mulder’s century and collaboration with Muthusamy took center stage on the second. The pair contributed 152 runs for South Africa’s unbroken seventh wicket, exceeding the previous Test record of 119 runs by Mulder and Kyle Verreynne against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Mulder and Muthusamy had come together after Bangladesh gained some momentum in the day’s opening session. Taijul Islam dismissed David Bedingham, de Zorzi, and Verreynne in successive overs, providing some relief for the home team.
Bedingham missed a slog-sweep to be bowled, while de Zorzi and Verreynne also missed sweeps to go out lbw. Taijul completed his five-for before Ryan Rickelton was withdrawn by Nahid Rana. Bangladesh hoped to wrap up South Africa early, but Mulder and Muthusamy led South Africa to a big total. Mulder was largely effective down the ground, hitting all eight fours and four sixes from wide long-off to mid-on. Muthusamy consistently fed Mulder the strike, but he also smacked the ball wonderfully.
Muthusamy hit two sixes through long-on, along with fours through mid-off, fine leg, and backward point. His flicked boundary through the slips propelled him to his first Test fifty. Taijul was Bangladesh’s best bowler with his 14th five-wicket haul, but it was also the team’s most expensive five-for, totaling 198 runs. Nahid grabbed a wicket, but Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz failed to produce any wickets.
