In St Kitts, West Indies easily defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets to clinch the three-match ODI series. It was the first ODI series victory for the West Indies over Bangladesh in a decade. Additionally, they had prevailed in the previous four ODI series between the two teams. In the first ODI, West Indies ended Bangladesh’s 11-match winning streak against them on Sunday. The home team bowled out the visitors for 227 in 45.5 overs, inspired by career-best figures of 4 for 22 from Jayden Seales.
Then, with a quick 82 from Brandon King, West Indies accelerated their chase and won in 36.5 overs. The two batters that finished the game undefeated were captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford, who hit 113 in the opening game. West Indies has improved their performance in the format, whereas Bangladesh has only won one of their previous six ODI series. They defeated England last month to win the ODI series for the second time in a row. Earlier in the year, they had lost ODI series against Sri Lanka and Australia.
Seales laid the groundwork for West Indies’ victory. Before Gudakesh Motie’s strong 2 for 36 held Bangladesh under control for the majority of the middle overs, he delivered three early punches. Mahmudullah and Tanzim Hasan’s 92-run partnership was the primary reason Bangladesh was only able to reach a total of 200 or more. For Bangladesh, it is a new record for the eighth wicket. In ODIs, Mahmudullah’s 62 was also his third straight fifty.
Tanzid hit rookie Marquino Mindley for two fours and as many sixes in the first three overs, giving Bangladesh a quick start before Seales claimed his wickets. Soon after, Soumya Sarkar was caught at mid-on for two by Seales. Following Soumya in the first powerplay were Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, both of whom were defeated by Seales. Litton plodded for four runs off of eighteen balls before his draw shot, which took the bat’s toe and sailed to point, was far too early.
Mehidy attempted to leave the ball, but it took the inside edge and went onto the stumps, leaving Seales stunned. At the other end, Tanzid had kept Bangladesh running, but he was unable to turn another start into a major one. He was caught at point in the eleventh over after hitting Justin Greaves for two fours. It was comparable to Tanzid’s defeat in the opening ODI. Then, Afif got off to a strong start, lofting Romario Shepherd twice over his head and once past cover while hitting him for four boundaries.
Afif, however, was caught at long-off for 24 after trying a similar shot off Motie. Both Rishad Hossain and Jaker Ali Then Motie came along, inexpensively and swiftly. Before Rishad got Mindley’s maiden ODI wicket, falling for a duck, Motie trapped Jaker leg before wicket for three. At this point, West Indies was reducing Bangladesh to 115 for seven, making it appear easy. Tanzim, who had previously scored a first-class fifty, had to be trusted by Mahmudullah, who had hit one six up to that moment.
Before sending Motie for his first six over long-on, Tanzim hit two fours and appeared determined. Up until then, Mahmudullah had hit two sixes. After hitting Greaves for a six and a four in back-to-back overs, the two bowled the same bowler again a few overs later. In the 44th over, Roston Chase caught Tanzim off his own bowling, ending the partnership. The young cricket player put out a great effort, hitting six boundaries during his 62-ball spell.
In the following over, Mahmudullah blasted Seales’ wide delivery down the neck of deep point in a surprising move that followed Tanzim back to the pavilion. He hit two fours and four sixes in his 62 off 92 balls. Mahmudullah achieved three consecutive fifties in ODIs for just the second time in his career. King started out strongly, striking the ball well square on both sides of the field and hitting five boundaries in the opening seven overs as the home team responded to Bangladesh’s 227. Lewis plodded on six off 23 balls as he reached 26.
Lewis hit Tanzim for three boundaries, including a flat six over long-leg, in the ninth over. In the fourteenth over, Lewis hit Mehidy for a tremendous hit down the ground before being dropped the following ball when Soumya failed to hold onto a challenging opportunity. At the time, Lewis was 29 years old. Shortly after King hit his half-century off fifty-two balls in the sixteenth over, Lewis hit Mehidy for his third six. In a way, his fourth was retaliation for Rana hitting him in the unmentionables in the 20th over.
This year, the duo finished their second-century opening relationship. King has participated in the opening stands for the last 500 years in the West Indies. After hitting 49 from 62 balls, Lewis, still in shock from the Rana blow, handed Rishad a caught-and-bowled to conclude this one. Bangladesh quickly let up five runs in overthrows, thus the wicket didn’t seem to help them. Litton also gave up four byes. Keacy Carty capitalized on their mistakes, hitting five boundaries while King hammered three sixes in a brief period of time.
Aside from hoisting Tanzim to the ground, he launched Rishad thrice and onto the pavilion building’s roof. In the 29th over, King was hit with a yorker from Rana. King could have missed the ball because of the extended shadow cast by one of the light towers on the field, but he left calmly after he and Carty added 66 runs for the second wicket. During his 76-ball stint, King hit three sixes and eight fours. Carty made 45 off 47 balls before falling shortly after King, slicing a catch to Rana off Afif Hossain.
In his ninth over, Rutherford hit Rishad for a four, then Hope hit him for a six. In order to finish the victory, Rutherford scornfully swung Shoriful Islam over square-leg for two sixes in the 37th over, fulfilling the last rituals of the series.
