After Hasan Mahmud heroically protected nine runs in a final over to secure a seven-run victory in the inaugural Twenty20 International at the Arnos Vale Ground, Bangladesh stopped Rovman Powell’s incredible attempt to lead the West Indies to an unlikely triumph. The West Indies’ first international match in St. Vincent in a decade was an exciting fight for the packed house. Before Powell hit four sixes and five fours in his 35-ball 60, West Indies was reduced to 38 for 5 by Mahedi Hasan’s four-wicket haul while defending 147.

However, Powell fell in the final over and was unable to lead them to victory. In the last over, when the West Indies needed 10 runs to win, Mahmud got rid of Powell and Alzarri Joseph. Litton Das, the captain of Bangladesh, was dismissed for the seventh time of the match after Mahmud caught Powell behind. For Bangladesh’s first Twenty20 International victory over the West Indies in six years, Mahmud bowled Joseph with eight to win off the final two. It was also a nice way to start the nation’s Victory Day back home.

For almost four overs, however, everything was going according to plan for Bangladesh. The West Indies were 61 for 7 in the 12th over when Romario Shepherd joined skipper Powell, who had hit a six and a four up until that point, to rally his team. Before Powell hit Taskin Ahmed for three sixes in a 23-run over to down the asking rate from over 11 an over to eight an over in 12 balls, the two bowled 15 off Rishad Hossain in the 14th over.

Powell finished the over with a lovely straight stroke after carving the first six against Taskin over extra cover and the following one high over point. Powell then smashed Tanzim Hasan for two fours, one of which increased his half-century off just 28 balls, after he had gone for 12 runs in the 16th over. This made it 28 to win from 24 balls. Shepherd hit Rishad for his first six, but he went in the following over as Taskin caught him at deep midwicket for 22 off 17 balls, so there was no respite from the opposition either.

Taskin’s opening delivery had Brandon King caught at mid-off, setting up a brilliant start for Bangladesh. After six balls, Nicholas Pooran was lured into a charge by Mahedi, who then hit him with a straight delivery to get him out for one. After hitting Tanzim for two sixes in a 25-run over, Mahedi then had Johnson Charles caught at mid-off. After Roston Chase dropped inside, avoiding a reverse sweep, Mahedi had Andre Fletcher, a last-minute substitute in the team, caught behind for two runs in the seventh over.

Before Powell let fly, Bangladesh had the game under control when Mahedi completed his allotted four overs for four for thirteen. When Akeal Hosein hit on successive balls, the West Indies also enjoyed a fantastic powerplay with the ball. Hosein became the West Indies’ top wicket-taker during powerplays in home Twenty20 Internationals after dismissing Tanzid Hasan for an 11-ball 6. Since making his T20I debut in July 2021, he has surpassed Samuel Badree’s 16-wicket total in that innings phase and remains the top spinner in powerplays in terms of wicket-taking.

Hosein took Litton Das’ easy return catch to prolong his recent slump in ODI play. After scoring 4 and 2 in the first two ODIs on this trip, it was Litton’s second consecutive duck. Sixes were key to Bangladesh’s batting comeback. They scored nine runs in the innings, which is the highest they had ever scored in T20Is against the West Indies. However, the eighth over was when the sixes began to appear. Soumya Sarkar hammered Shepherd over the covers after Jaker Ali lofted Chase down the ground.

Jaker mowed Shepherd over square leg after he smashed Gudakesh Motie for two more sixes in the eleventh over. With five overs left, Bangladesh was struggling until Obed McCoy got rid of Soumya for his 50th T20I wicket. Next up was Shamim Hossain, who was playing in his first Twenty20 International in a year. Before facing McCoy directly for the same outcome, he top-edged Alzarri Joseph for his first six. Before Mahedi hit McCoy for a six over extra cover in the penultimate over to almost reach 150, Shamim scored one more against Joseph in the 18th over.
