Five 50-plus scores were scored on the bash-through-the-line Wankhede surface in the dewy circumstances, including a 17-ball half-century from Suryakumar Yadav. Earlier in the evening, Captain Hardik Pandya bowled a solitary over and was jeered, but when he ended the chase with a six, a sizable audience cheered him on.
When Rajat Patidar and Faf du Plessis combined, RCB was 23 for 2 in the fourth over. Prior to that, in his first over, the third of the innings, Bumrah had Virat Kohli swiping and edging behind for three runs off nine balls. The following over saw Akash Madhwal produce his trademark slip to force Will Jacks—who was replacing Cameron Green in the IPL—to flail a catch to mid-on for eight.
By remaining leg side of the ball and pumping the ball over the top with his hands, Du Plessis attempted to rescue the powerplay. Like Du Plessis, Patidar got out to a fast start and went on to become the first of several half-centurions in the match. After hitting two consecutive sixes off Gerald Coetzee, Patidar achieved the milestone. However, South Africa quickly responded, bowling him out for fifty off only 26 balls in the following ball.
Bumrah returned with the old ball to virtually end RCB’s innings after taking out Kohli with the new one. He removed du Plessis (61), and Mahipal Lomror (0), in an over that was full of yorkers and low full-tosses. As Lomror was caught leg before wicket by a yorker off the following delivery, Du Plessis was unable to get under a difficult-to-hit low full-toss and holed out to long-on.
Bumrah was on a hat-trick again on his next over, but he failed to finish it this time either. He removed Vyshak Vijaykumar and impact player Saurav Chauhan off consecutive balls, but Akash Deep managed to block the hat-trick ball, a yorker.
But after taking five wickets, Bumrah was hoisted to his feet by his old captain Rohit Sharma, and he was booed from the dugout by his old bowling partner and current bowling coach, Lasith Malinga. On a day where 439 runs were scored, Bumrah finished 4-0-22-2 against the Delhi Capitals on Sunday. On a dewy night, Thursday’s performance was even more memorable.
After choosing a slower ball from Bumrah and hitting it over extra-cover, Karthik—who has previously represented MI—had the Wankhede crowd cheering his name. It was a reminder to his six that helped India win the Nidahas Trophy in 2018. He also played several more spectacular shots. Karthik scooped him for two fours over short third in the 16th over, costing MI 19 runs, as Madhwal denied him free access to the shorter square boundary on the leg side. Karthik also contributed to taking 19 off Madhwal’s last over, which was also the innings’ last over, but it would not be enough for RCB.
In the first exchanges, Mohammed Siraj and Reece Topley swung the new ball, but Kishan made the most of the powerplay. Siraj took one into his pads and he plucked it up for a six-point play over square leg. Then Kishan smashed him over point when Topley moved one away from him. When Topley got his edge on 12, Kishan had a nervous moment, but for the next four runs, the ball went between the keeper and first slip. Kishan persisted in his boundary-setting performance and replicated his feat of hitting a fifty in the MI powerplay.
Although Jacks dismissed Rohit for 38 and Akash Deep stopped Kishan on 69, RCB would not be spared. As the dew came in, their bowlers were missing their lengths, and Suryakumar went about making things even more harder for them. Maxwell could have dismissed Suryakumar on 15, but instead he dumped him at backward point and fled the field while groaning in agony. Then, Suryakumar unfurled his Supla stroke and scythed wide balls over point with his quick hands and wrist movements. In the thirteenth over, he stormed to his quickest T20 fifty, hitting 4, 6, 4, 4 against Topley. He was bowled out in the following over, but with 27 balls remaining, Hardik and Tilak Varma helped MI win with a higher NRR.
