Sikandar Raza’s unbroken 72 and Brian Bennett’s all-around performance enabled Zimbabwe to win the T20I series against Bangladesh in a consoling manner. In the fifth Twenty20 International, the visitors triumphed by eight wickets, narrowing the series deficit to 4-1. Bennett dominates the two powerplays. After taking two wickets in the Bangladesh powerplay and finishing with 2-20, he hit a brisk 70 in the chase. Raza had four low scores in the game before finishing with his first half-century on tour.

Bangladesh slipped to 15 for 3, but Mahmudullah’s 54 held them in check. It was his second half-century of the year, and he furthered his argument to be included in Bangladesh’s World T20 Cup middle order. Along with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who also shown some form with a 36, they established a 69-run partnership on the fourth wicket. But Zimbabwe’s bowling, particularly in the opening few overs when they bowled two maiden overs, kept the home team in check.

Bennett together with Blessing Bangladesh was suppressed during Muzarabani’s power play. After Bennett dismissed Soumya Sarkar and Towhid Hridoy in consecutive overs, Muzarabani got Tanzid Hossain to top edge a slog in the second over. At one point, Sean Williamson made the easy catch off a dab from Soumya. Hridoy attempted a square cut but was caught off guard because he misjudged the ball’s bounce. A maiden each from Bennett and Muzarabani saw the home team collapse to 15 for 3 in the fifth over.

Mahmudullah hit three fours in the first four balls he faced, threatening Zimbabwe’s supremacy. After hitting Bennett for a cover drive and a slice through point, he began with a sweep. In the fourth wicket partnership with Najmul Hossain Shanto, he scored 69 runs. At short third man, Luke Jongwe removed Shanto from the game on 25 after the batsman mishandled a hoick against Wellington Masakadza.

Shanto hit Masakadza for his maiden six, but when he tried to repeat off the following ball, Ryan Burl at deep midwicket fielded the ball. Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan put up 39 runs for the fifth wicket, with Bennett taking a ball over long-on for his lone six. Shakib’s 17-ball 21 was cut short by Jonathan Campbell’s outstanding sprinting catch from deep midwicket, and Muzarabani then had Mahmudullah caught at cover for 54.

Bennett gave Zimbabwe a great start with the bat after making an impression with the ball. In the opening over, he hit Mahedi Hasan for two fours. In his following over, he hit Mahedi for two sixes and a four, and in his fourth over, he hammered Saifuddin for two more fours. Before Raza hit his first six, Shakib had Zimbabwe slowed down after stumping Marumani in the fifth over. Saifuddin had been hit over midwicket. Bennett hit a six off Rishad Hossain to surpass his previous best in Twenty20 Internationals before reaching fifty in the twelfth over. Before getting out to Saifuddin for 70 off 49 balls, he hit two more sixes to bring his total to five sixes. He hit five fours as well.

After the opener was out, Raza, who had been Bennett’s supporter during the 74-run second wicket partnership, kept up the strong hitting. In the sixteenth over, he hit two fours against Saifuddin. Zimbabwe now needed 32 runs from the final four overs. With a four off a draw, he reached his fifty off forty-one balls. Raza then hit Saifuddin for a four and a six over long off, before launching a massive six over midwicket. With four sixes and six fours, he scored an undefeated 72 from 46 balls to finish. With eight runs remaining, Campbell struck the winning runs in the nineteenth over.
