Pakistan had to postpone two practise sessions to temporary indoor facilities due to persistent rain in Dallas over the last week. Rather than arriving early to allow for acclimatization, Pakistan chose to play T20I series in Ireland and the UK during the previous three weeks. They lost one of their three games against Ireland and were soundly defeated in the two games they played against England, thus they didn’t exactly look like a formidable team vying for a championship.
The news of Imad Wasim’s confirmed injury has made Pakistan’s problems worse. Wasim was added to the team because of his expertise in the US and the Caribbean. Furthermore, as the decisive match against England shown, their only realistic alternative seems to be the opening combination of Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan, which means that much of the experimenting during the previous five months of preparation has not paid off. There are weak spots across the order due to a number of players who are now having serious form issues. Saim Ayub, Azam Khan, and Shadab Khan are particularly troubled.
If leaping from success to misfortune without notice is a quintessential Pakistani quality, then belief and self-assurance are distinctly American. Not a better location, not a more hospitable story device for an upset, or at least a Texan thriller.
